San Diego’s South Park neighborhood hosts its quarterly Walkabout tonight, with businesses and studios open late along with bars and restaurants.
In an unplanned coincidence, San Diego mural artist John Hiemstra is finishing up an unusual mural project in South Park’s historic Firehouse #9 on 30th and Juniper this weekend and will have the beautiful new barn doors open to the public to check out the project, a 30 foot long set of vertical blinds for a private residence custom painted with a cityscape of downtown San Diego.
San Diego photographer Mike Brown has been documenting the process and will screen a rough edit of his time lapse filming of John painting the mural. Mike also took all the reference photos for the project.

The approximately 12 minute film will show on the big blank wall of the newly rehabilitated Firehouse #9. Currently for lease, the raw space is only a temporary studio for John to do this particular project, making tonight’s event a real “once in a lifetime” event,
