San Diego Museum of Art’s excellent new blog on TFM friends

TFM found this note reading The Gallery, an excellent new blog full of current San Diego art notes, well illustrated and linked by Sarah at SDMA. Great job!

This particular note mentions TFM friend Pierette Van Cleve and one of our favorite San Diego artists, Hugo Crosthwaite, whose work we’ve had the privilege to frame many times so far.

Friday Lunch: How Cool is Hugo Crosthwaite?
Friday we had lunch with Pierette Van Cleve, of Van Cleve Fine Art. Van Cleve represents artist Huge Crosthwaite, who is a San Diego artist (in NY) making it big. Really big. And he’s going to be at the Museum in February installing a major piece for Brutal Beauty: Drawings by Hugo Crosthwaite. Not sure what this installation might be like? Check this clip out (below). At the February Culture & Cocktails you’ll have a chance to see him at work…We’re pretty smitten, and we think you will be too.

This thoughtful review of the Alexander Calder jewelry show in its only west coast exhibition at the San Diego Museum of Art in Balboa Park through January 2010 was just published by San Diego gallery director Alex Salazar of Madison Gallery in La Jolla, CA– its an appreciative reminder to see some of the first tier art available yo us in San Diego while its in town.

Alexander Calder must have loved his sister’s dolls. In fact, starting in 1906 he began making jewelry for them. This premise sets the tone for the “Calder Jewelry” exhibition at SDMA in Balboa Park as delightful, humorous, and appealing to anyone that loves accessories. Producing over 1,500 pieces of jewelry (many gifts to his wife, some collected by Peggy Guggenheim, worn by Georgia O’Keeffe, and featured on Angelica Huston the cover of The New York Times Magazine) this exhibit will leave you wondering, “How much are they worth?”

Well, just last week on October 21, 2009 at Sotheby’s Rare Jewels and Objects D’art; a Superb Collection, A Brass Necklace, By Alexander Calder sold for $245,500. Granted, the works on this exhibit are not for sale and that is a wonderful thing. On loan and co-organized by the Norton Museum of Art, West Palm Beach, Florida and the Calder Foundation, New York, this collection of tiaras, earrings, broaches, belt buckles, rings are together for the first major museum show dedicated to only his jewelry.

The San Diego Museum of Art Receives Significant Collection from Sana Art Foundation

Latest news from another of our favorite San Diego art institutions, the San Diego Museum of Art, who just scored this terrific donation:

SAN DIEGO, CA.- The San Diego Museum of Art is acquiring a significant collection of works of art from Africa, Oceania, and the Americas (AOA) as part of a newly formed alliance with the Sana Art Foundation, one of the largest collections of its kind in Southern California.

The alliance includes the transfer from the Foundation to the Museum of more than 900 works of art from these regions across the globe. This transfer will increase the Museum’s collection of African art from fewer than one hundred pieces to several hundred items, and it will have an even greater impact on the size and scope of the Oceanic collection.

As the region’s largest art museum, The San Diego Museum of Art is dedicated to presenting and interpreting this historically underrepresented field in an encyclopedic context….
