Join artists Jim Skalman, Lewis deSoto, and Kevin Lynch in the galleries as they discuss their work on view in the exhibitions Attempt to Raise Hell and Octagon: Photographs by Kevin Lynch.

Jim Skalman is Professor and Chair of the Department of Art and Design at Point Loma Nazarene University and is known for his subtly subversive environmental sculptures. Conceptual artist Lewis deSoto works in a wide range of media and has shown work in museums and galleries throughout the United States and Europe. He is currently a Professor of Art at San Francisco State University. Kevin Lynch is a Los Angeles-based photographer. His work has been shown in museums and galleries throughout the U.S. and Europe, as well as published in numerous publications, including Wallpaper, GQ, Harper’s Bazaar, and Vogue, among others.

A renowned scholar on the work of Francis Bacon, MCASD Director Hugh M. Davies has lectured on the artist internationally, most recently at the invitation of the Tate Britain in London. RSVP to this event.

Open House: Free Third Thursday Evening

→Thursday, 7/16/09 > 5-7 PM > La Jolla and Downtown
On the third Thursday of every month from 5 to 7 pm, visitors receive FREE admission to both the Museum’s downtown and La Jolla locations. Plus, free themed Gallery Guide-led tours beginning at 5 and 6 pm.

alt.pictureshows returns in August

Part cinematic funhouse, part short-film festival extraordinaire, the seventh annual alt.pictureshows continues to break down the barriers of the movie-going experience. Viewers are encouraged to participate in “physical channel surfing” to experience a range of different short films in the Museum’s various exhibition spaces as they screen on a loop throughout the evening.

Rising Tide: Film and Video Works from the MCA Collection, Sydney

Co-organized by MCASD and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney, this exhibition focuses on Australian film and video works from MCA, Sydney’s permanent collection.

Modern Masters
Featuring paintings that represent the pinnacle of mid-century art practice, this exhibition highlights works by major modern artists such as Willem de Kooning, Morris Louis, Joan Mitchell, and Mark Rothko.

As the new year starts, we wanted to remind our audience that we *loved* this show at MCASD, which closes at the end of January. If you are in San Diego this month, go see it!

Below is some additional info from the MCASD site, including links to the site established as part of the work of the show, interviews with some of the artists (including Dario Robleto, whose installation blew us away) and Robert Pincus’ review of the show in the Tribune.

Human/Nature: Artists Respond to a Changing Planet is a pioneering artist residency and collaborative exhibition project that, for the first time on this scale, uses contemporary art to investigate the relationships between fragile natural environments and the human communities that depend upon them. This collaborative multi-year exhibition project sent eight leading artists to eight UNESCO World Heritage sites around the globe to create new work informed and inspired by their experiences in these diverse cultural and natural regions.

Organized by MCASD and the University of California, Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive (BAM/PFA), in partnership with the international conservation organization Rare, the exhibition features new commissioned works by Mark Dion, Ann Hamilton, Iñigo Manglano-Ovalle, Marcos Ramírez ERRE, Rigo 23, Dario Robleto, Diana Thater and Xu Bing created in response to their travels to these threatened sites. Human/Nature will also be on view at BAM/PFA from April 1 through September 27, 2009.

American Pop Icons at Noel-Baza in Little Italy

Okay so its not at MCASD but with the names in the line-up it easily could be.

I stopped in last Friday night with a replacement cleat for hanging one of the pieces in this show and was blown away by assembled imagery and roster of essential Pop Art masters represented in print, screenprint and beyond. Full disclosure: I love Roy Lichtenstein’s work, featured on the postcard, so they had me from the beginning.
