Dario Robleto | MCASD 2010 Art Auction works

We were blown away by Dario Robleto’s phenomenal creations exhibited at the ArtistsRespond! show at MCASD in 2008-1009, and so are excited to his name among the contributors to this year’s MCASD benefit art auction.

Notes on Electronics (Make Me Whole Again) is an iris print from another area altogether of Robleto’s body of work. Though small and discreet in comparison to the intricately constructed room size installations previously at MCASD, it offers comparable conceptual provocation on closer inspection/ Here is the image from the MCASD Art Auction site:

Ryan McGinness | MCASD 2010 Art Auction works

The Frame Maker staff has loved Ryan McGinness’ intricately illustrated pieces ever since our friend Mark Quint began representing his work here in southern California, so of course its a pleasure to see his work contributed to the MCASD cause this spring.

Untitled is another McGinness piece where you have to look closely (and in person) at the marks on the canvas (or in this case, (panel). This is about as far from dashed off decorative abstract painting as you can get, with every edge, sweep and curve precisely laid in miniature landscape with fine detail. The Frame Maker is proud to be the trusted regular picture framer for the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego every year, but the bi-annual MCASD Art Auction gives us an exciting opportunity to take our support and enthusiasm for San Diego’s premiere contemporary art institution a step further.

2010 marks the seventh time we’ve had the pleasure to sponsor this event by providing all of the museum quality picture framing required to present dozens of world class donated art works to the patrons, supporters and fans of MCASD. While it always feels good to donate thousands of dollars in essential services to a vital San Diego art institution (especially during indecisive economic times), we are even more pleased to support MCASD with our decades of experience and expertise in handling and presenting some of the world’s finest art.

New York Artist Hugo Crosthwaite returns to create monumental On – Site Drawing and Exhibition
Brutal Beauty for San Diego Museum of Art.

Hugo Crosthwaite returns to San Diego for two celebrated events: a San Diego Museum of Art exhibit of his drawings entitled Brutal Beauty and Dark Dreams, a twelve-year survey of his work at Noel-Baza Fine Art Gallery.
Brutal Beauty: Drawings by Hugo Crosthwaite at The San Diego Museum of Art, February 27 – July 18, 2010
Brutal Beauty features a cross section of eleven drawings lent by local collectors. As part of the Brutal Beauty exhibit, Crosthwaite will create a monumental drawing on site. Crosthwaite will tackle the wall without any pre-drawing or calculation. Instead he will improvise and let the drawing evolve organically. Once the drawing is complete, he will unravel the narrative by de-constructing it with white painted rectangular shapes. Painting in this instance being the death of the drawing.
Amy Galpin, San Diego Museum Project Curator for American Art said of Crosthwaite’s art “His figures exude a brutal beauty: they are as awe-inspiring for their physical forms as they are for their dramatic sensibilities that suggest baroque, surreal, and film noir influences. ”
Visitors will be able to watch him work either in person and through a live feed video and follow him on Twitter and receive updates and information from his Facebook page

From Santa Barbara to San Diego, arts venues are preparing exhibitions and a host of other programming that will be part of the ambitious initiative called “Pacific Standard Time: Art in Los Angeles, 1945-1980.” The Getty Foundation gave $3.6 million in 2008 to support research and planning for these presentations. Now, it’s adding $3.1 million to support the actual implementation of this broad array of shows and their accompanying publications at 26 institutions — set to open in September and October 2011 and continue into spring 2012.

Locally, the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego is participating — in a large way. The institution has long had a strong connection with artists who were central to the Light and Space school, such as Robert Irwin (who lives here), James Turrell, Maria Nordman and Mary Corse, as well as related artists like Bruce Nauman. All will be represented in “Phenomenal: California Light and Space,” which is being organized by the museum’s curator, Robin Clark. The Getty gave $225,000 in the first round to the MCASD, and now it has granted the museum the same amount for the second phase of this show. (The National Endowment for the Arts also gave the museum $40,000 for the same project in 2008…..

MCASD’s Automatic Cities show is subtitled “The Architectural Imaginary in Contemporary Art” and “explores the myriad influences of architecture on contemporary art production”. As big architecture fans, we enjoyed this show , which consists of “images of sites and cities built and unbuilt, rising from collective experience and imagination.”
