HUGH DAVIES ON FRANCIS BACONThursday, July 16 > 7 PM After the suicide of his lover George Dyer in 1971, Francis Bacon began a series of paintings known as the Black Triptychs. Dr. Hugh Davies, MCASD’s David C. Copley Director, interviewed Bacon multiple times in 1973 about these paintings, which Davies has described as a “frenzied momentum of a struggle against death”, giving him unique perspective on the artist and these works. A renowned scholar on the work of Francis Bacon, Davies has lectured on the artist internationally, most recently at the invitation of the Tate Britain in London, and has published extensively on the artist. He serves on the Francis Bacon Authentication Committee, and in 1999 curated the MCASD exhibition Francis Bacon: The Papal Portraits of 1953.
