Check out this fascinating article on the late great San Diego artist, filmmaker, and art critic Manny Farber.

When Manny Farber, local painter extraordinaire, died in 2008, he hadn’t done any writing on films for some 31 years. But the tributes for Farber the film critic came forth at a rate that surprised even his wife, Patricia Patterson, a highly accomplished artist and a collaborator on the later film writings.

“He was one of those critics who opened other critics’ eyes,” said film critic John Powers in a tribute on “Fresh Air,” the WHYY show that airs nationally on NPR stations. And the highly regarded film historian David Thomson said, in his obituary for The Guardian in England, “Manny was the first person in English who wrestled with words to arouse the feelings produced by imagery on screen.”

Mural art open studio tonight in South Park Firehouse #9, San Diego, CA

San Diego’s South Park neighborhood hosts its quarterly Walkabout tonight, with businesses and studios open late along with bars and restaurants.

In an unplanned coincidence, San Diego mural artist John Hiemstra is finishing up an unusual mural project in South Park’s historic Firehouse #9 on 30th and Juniper this weekend and will have the beautiful new barn doors open to the public to check out the project, a 30 foot long set of vertical blinds for a private residence custom painted with a cityscape of downtown San Diego.

San Diego photographer Mike Brown has been documenting the process and will screen a rough edit of his time lapse filming of John painting the mural. Mike also took all the reference photos for the project.

The approximately 12 minute film will show on the big blank wall of the newly rehabilitated Firehouse #9. Currently for lease, the raw space is only a temporary studio for John to do this particular project, making tonight’s event a real “once in a lifetime” event,
