The Housewives Are Coming!

The hit rock musical comedy that entertained sold-out houses in L.A. for over four months arrives in San Diego this September. Get ready for the Divas of Domesticity! Corinne Dekker, Jamey Hood and Jayme Lake (“Megawatt performances” – Coast to Coast Newspapers) reprise their roles as The Housewives, three young homemakers who form a band for their PTA talent show – then go on to become bigger than Brillo with their hilarious brand of “domestic” rock ‘n roll. The limited 4-week engagement opens September 4 at the Tenth Avenue Theatre in San Diego.

The work of San Diego’s top tier contemporary artists hasn’t been seen in the same place at the same time since 1985, when the La Jolla Museum of Contemporary Art presented “A San Diego Exhibition: Forty-Two Emerging Artists.”

Quint Contemporary Art brings this long drought to an end with Homing In: An Exhibition of 50 San Diego Artists. The show presents paintings, photographs, video and sculpture; features abstraction and representation; and offers moods ranging from hot to cool – all in formats less than 24″ wide due to the limited space available.

Some of the exhibition’s artists are in their fifties, sixties and older; and were part of the La Jolla Museum’s survey nearly a quarter century ago. The exhibition’s younger artists, those in their twenties, thirties, and forties may have no recollection whatsoever of that earlier survey.

This exhibition is organized by gallery director Ben Strauss-Malcolm and in a move that’s unusual in the competitive world of contemporary art galleries he invited many artists affiliated with other local galleries to participate in order to make the exhibition more reflective of the full gamut of work coming out of studios in the San Diego region.

Anyone interested in the look and conditions of art in San Diego today is encouraged to visit this exhibition.

The Frame Maker Event Sponsor Booth at ArtWalk

Here’s some pictures of our booth over the past weekend in Little Italy at ArtWalk, which was a great time meeting people and spreading the word about our new Artist Services program, a preview of our new show “Artists’ Proof” opening in The Frame Maker showroom next week, and promoting our Business of Art scholarship program with ArtWalk in the booth next door with artist Jessica Siemens.

Hospitality framing contract #1 complete; on with #2!

The Frame Maker is proud to say that 654 of 654 finished custom frames were shipped and installed in January for a southern California hospitality project without a single return.

Shortly after, we began shipping finished pieces for hospitality project #2– after Thursday’s pick up, we will have shipped 517 of 1170 total pieces for the new contract.

Shipping of the first of our big contract picture frame orders from 2008 began right after the New Year, with weekly deliveries scheduled through March 1. We’re relieved, since there are so many pieces in these orders that the shop is overflowing– here’s a pic of our conference room packed with finished framed art:

There’s quite a variety of finished work, posters, fine art on paper, original paintings on panel and canvas as well as several giclee canvas series custom mounted to insure longevity in a public/hospitality environment.

The more unique pieces take up more space and require special handling, since the art itself is not protected in the same way that traditional frames with glass protect the artwork.

That said, all of these frames are custom and different (as opposed to standardized all-the-same-size jobs) and require thoughful organization at every step of the production process, including packing the van!
