The Frame Maker is once again pleases to contribute a series of custom frames to the SDSU Children’s center annual “A is for Art” project. Collecting many pieces of student-created art from the past year, this program is truly inspiring as some of the works are from kids as young as 18 months old!.

Through out the school year, the Center brings in professional artists from many disciplines to work with all the different age groups in creative process art art sessions. The results are not just wonderful guided art pieces, but also wonderful stories of children’s experiences and creative development recorded in these canvases.

The project culminates in a “gallery” opening and auction of the kids’s work that benefits the continuing programs at the Children’s Center on the SDSU campus. The gallery is actually the KPBS soundstage, generously reconfigured by KPBS for the evening into a white wall exhibition space with elegant lighting and catering, staffed by SDSU student volunteers and attended by the children, proud parents and staff of the Center as well as supporters across both the SDSU campus and the San Diego art and education communities.

The event is this Friday April 16, 2010 at the KPBS studios on the SDSU campus, please visit the A is for Art project online for more information.

We’re been working on one of our favorite annual art events happening this week at San Diego State University, the Children’s Center’s “A is for Art” benefit auction. We’re working on a write-up and realized we hadn’t mentioned SDSU’s new permanent art exhibition space near us in downtown San Diego that just opened last week, so we’re putting this up first–their inaugural show is excellent!

San Diego State’s new downtown San Diego art gallery opens April 9 in the historic Electra Building at the corner of Broadway and Kettner Boulevard. Intended to serve as an exhibition space for contemporary art and design by artists from around the world, it debuts with an exhibition of three widely known contemporary artists who are all SDSU alumni.

The SDSU Downtown Gallery’s inaugural exhibition, Divergence: The Work of John Baldessari, Deborah Butterfield, and Andrea Zittel, will reflect the artists’ different styles and generations within conceptual art….

We’ve been so focused on the 2010 MCASD Art Auction this year that we didn’t take up sponsorship again of another world class art event in San Diego, Mission Federal ArtWalk. In 2009, not only was The Frame Maker an official corporate sponsor of ArtWalk, we also built a business of art scholarship program awarded to an outstanding SDSU art student, Jessica Siemens. This year, we will just be cheering from the sidelines as the April 24 & 25 outdoor art festival in neighboring Little Italy falls just after the MCASD Auction on April 21.

We’ll be faeaturing some of our favorite ArtWalk artists here over the month of April, so check back here for our picks about who not to miss. While you’re around the web, look for this year ArtWalk collateral and check it out when you have the time!.

Good overview of this year’s installment of the Urban Tree project from SanDiego.com’s David Batterson:

There’s no bark on these “trees,” and dogs won’t be fertilizing them. Urban Trees 6 is this year’s planting of marvelous sculptures downtown along Harbor Drive, from the Cruise Ship Terminal to Hawthorn Street. They’ll be there for a year, and nary a leaf will fall.

The public art project began in 2003, and here’s how it works. Artists submit a model of their urban tree idea, and the Port of San Diego’s public art committee narrows it down to 30 finalists. From those little acorns, great oaks then grow. Each artist gets a base and pole (the tree “trunk”) and $2,500 for materials (whatever the artist wants to use).

It’s interesting while walking along to see how others view the trees….”
